Ciara Byrne, whose partner and father of two Diarmuid Twomey has been missing since December 20, says she has accepted that he is not coming home and has told their eldest daughter that he is in heaven.

The family were dealt another blow last night when Diarmuid’s mother Anne Twomey passed away. She had been ill for some time.

The missing man was also a full-time carer to his father, who has been admitted to a nursing home since his son’s disappearance.

Ms Byrne now fears that that she will never find out what happened her partner.

“As the days go by I’m afraid that I could still be here in a year’s time, not knowing what happened,” she said.

“He was my best friend, I miss him so much, but I feel worse for the kids,” she said.

Their eldest daughter is four and their youngest daughter is two.

“Our eldest daughter who is four kept running to the door, expecting her dad to come back so I had to tell her that he has gone to heaven,” said Ms Byrne.

Ms Byrne is convinced that someone knows something about Mr Twomey’s disappearance, and she is appealing to anyone with information to contact gardaí, even by anonymous letter.

“The gardaí maintain that he is still out there but if he was, surely he would have been found by now.”

Inspector Gary McPolin who is leading the investigation said Gardaí have no reason to suspect foul play.

Gardaí are appealing for three men who visited Whitechurch Recycling Centre at 6.20am to contact the gardaí so that they can eliminate them from their enquiries.

Insp McPolin said the unusually harsh weather conditions have hampered progress on the case, and with improved weather he has renewed appeals to farmers in the area to search their properties.

Anyone with information should contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on 021-4946200.
