A SPECIAL standing-down ceremony was held yesterday for respected leader and long-serving member of Cork City Fire Service, Edward Buckley, who is retiring after 42 years service.
The official stand-down took place at Angelsea Street, organised by his colleagues who expressed regret to see him leave.

Mr Buckley has fought some of Cork’s most daunting, complex fires, and as an emergency responder, has helped lessen the impact of Cork’s most tragic accidents on the roads and waterways.
But beyond rescuing and supporting Cork people in their most vulnerable hour, Mr Buckley has fostered a flourishing tradition of supporting charitable causes through the fire service. He has invited the community in to the fire service, and brought the fire service out to meet the community.
Children have become regular visitors at the Angelsea Street station, 70 autistic children and their families were among recent visitors who clambered aboard the city’s fire engines for a fun day where fire service volunteers give children a sneak peak into their world.

“It has been wonderful helping people through working with the emergency services, and I’ve been blessed to have such great colleagues. It’s like an extended family,” Mr Buckley said.
