MERCY University Hospital has confirmed that visiting restrictions are set to remain in place until further notice due to an outbreak of the vomiting bug.

Mercy HospitalThe vomiting bug, known as Norovirus, has plagued both Cork University Hospital and the Mercy in recent months.
A statement from the Mercy said: “The restrictions have been implemented to allow the hospital contain the outbreak and prevent the risk of cross-infection.”
The hospital will review the situation daily and will lift restrictions when it is safe to do so.
Visiting is restricted in all areas except for the following: critically ill, but no more than two visitors at any one time; children, but only parents and grandparents may visit children in St Anne’s Ward with no more than two visitors per bed at any one time.
Earlier this month, Cork University Hospital announced visiting restrictions while it attempted to deal with the “large volume” of Norovirus infections, a type of viral gastroenteritis. As a result, visitors for critically unwell patients were the only ones allowed access.
In March, a number of patients scheduled for surgery at the facility had their operations cancelled in a bid to reduce overcrowding.
Hospitals nationwide were ordered by ministerial directive to take a series of steps to reduce emergency department crowding when it reaches certain specified levels, including the cancellation of non-urgent elective surgery.
