A MAN in his 30s sustained a serious head injury on the Grand Parade at approximately 3.15am yesterday morning following a violent assault.
It is believed that he was the victim of a one-punch assault — an attack in which the victim is knocked out with one strike to the temple area at the side of the head where the skull is weakest.

The victim hit the concrete pavement outside the English Market, and the perpetrator fled the scene immediately.
He was rushed to Cork University Hospital and despite suffering internal bleeding, he was stabilised and his condition is no longer believed to be life-threatening.
CCTV cameras operate in the area and gardaí are investigating a definite line of inquiry. The scene on the Grand Parade was preserved by gardaí yesterday.

One-punch assaults can be deadly. The skull is thin around the temple area so even a low force blow can do considerable damage and fracture the skull or tear major arteries causing a haemorrhage and this pooled blood can deprive the brain of oxygen and ultimately kill the victim.
Victims can immediately lose consciousness in these assaults so cannot use their arms or legs to break their fall which can result in them hitting their head again, potentially causing more damage to the brain and the skull.
One-punch assaults are not specifically recorded in Ireland, but they are categorised in the North and in Australia, where public information campaigns have aimed to raise awareness about this dangerous behaviour.
At least 20 people died in the North from one-punch attacks between 2004 and 2015.
Irish citizens in Australia have been victims of one-punch attacks.
