THE eight new moorings for visiting boats installed in Youghal harbour by Cork County Council will enhance tourism in the town.

That was the verdict of Minister of State, David Stanton, TD, as efforts are made to recapture the magic that made Youghal one of Ireland’s favourite holiday destination.
Mr Stanton said: “I have been working with Youghal Maritime Development Group in Youghal to develop the marine tourism potential in the town and arranged a meeting between members of the group and then-Marine Minister Simon Coveney in October 2015 to explore the options to develop the marine tourism sector, in particular, a marina. These eight moorings are the first step in this process and I hope that they will encourage visitors to travel to Youghal by boat.”
Mr Stanton said plans are also well underway for a public floating pontoon at Nealon’s Quay to allow for more visiting boats in the future. He added: “Cork County Council has secured planning for this development and drawings and costings have been prepared. A public consultation process has also recently concluded and it is understood that no objections to the plans were made.”
The enthusiasm and public appetite for Youghal’s tourism industry made it one of the best in Ireland, he said.
“The high level of public support for marine tourism developments in the town is welcome. Youghal has superb maritime resources situated on the Blackwater estuary in a scenic part of East Cork. The beaches are excellent and the boardwalk has been fully repaired after it was badly damaged in storms. The multi-million investment in a modern wastewater treatment plant will also be of great benefit.”
Youghal’s tourism product recently received a further boost with the opening of the Clock Gate Tower and other recent large funding allocations for St Mary’s Collegiate Church and the Town Walls and the official opening of the Raleigh Quarter.
