THE Merchants Quay Shopping Centre is to undergo major redevelopment in the coming months after planning permission was granted for its refurbishment.
The landmark shopping centre at the top of Patrick’s Street will see its internal malls relocated to allow it to accommodate larger stores.
Merchants Quay Visual 02The existing malls on the ground and first floors will be relocated so that they are directly alongside Marks & Spencer, which will allow for a row of larger units to be located between the new mall and Merchant’s Quay.
Built in the 1980s by Owen O’Callaghan the shopping centre is now owned by Friends First.
The redevelopment will allow for a reduced number of larger stores on the ground and first floor. Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Dunnes, Supervalu and Boots are the main occupiers of Merchant’s Quay.
Planners in City Hall have this week granted permission for the centre’s redevelopment which includes a new entrance onto Patrick Street.
Once complete it is understood Heatons or Dealz may take over the first floor unit that faces Patrick Street.
