THERE will be a sea of purple on the streets of Cork tomorrow, as hundreds of Cork ARC supporters take on the Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon.

The Cancer Support House has been providing key services for patients and their families at ‘Cliffdale’ on O’Donovan Rossa Road since 2003, with additional outreach meetings in Knocknaheeny and Bantry as well as dedicated phone lines.
The ongoing support of generous volunteers is vital, said Marketing and Communications Manager Joanne McCarthy.
“The beauty of our service is that it is confidential and discreet. People can just knock on the door and come in and talk,” she said.
“All of our services are free of charge and we help people from the point of diagnosis through their treatment and down the line, as well as their families and friends.”
She said that while the organisation has a small team of staff, it is supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
“We wouldn’t be able to open the doors without them. Our volunteers give their services free of charge and with an incredible generosity of spirit. It is a great way for the people of Cork to give back, commemorate someone who has passed away or honour someone who is battling cancer. It makes us proud that we have that kind of support.”
Among those joining Cork ARC’s team are twenty colleagues from Penneys’ Patrick Street branch.
Those who are not running will be taking part in spirit on the day, as the Patrick Street store will be holding a no uniform day to raise additional funds. Staff will be wearing purple and making a donation to ARC to raise further awareness.
Assistant manager Mary O’Donovan said the store is delighted to support the cause.
“We do a lot of charity work here in Penneys and have supported various charities over the years. We really appreciate and applaud the great work ARC does, and wish them every success on Sunday.”
