The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) action saw members withdraw from clerical and support duties to focus on direct nursing care.

The dispute is in relation to what they deem to be on-going inadequate and unsafe nurse staffing levels on the ward.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Mary Rose Carroll, said that the union has engaged with hospital management on an on-going basis since December, but concerns have not been adequately addressed.

A final attempt to prevent the action yesterday proved fruitless, with the union accusing management of reneging on commitments given at the Workplace Relations Commission in May and June this year.

“There has been absolutely no agreement reached and no firm offer put on the table,” Ms Carroll said.

“Management are committed to filling those vacancies but could give us no timeline as to when that will happen. This puts nurses in a difficult position and they feel that they have no choice but to begin this work to rule.”

Ms Carroll said that the work to rule will continue until agreement can be reached, but that staff have no plans to instigate a full strike.
