SOME 200 people attended a candlelit vigil at the Lough last night to remember those who have died by suicide.

The poignant event drew large crowds despite heavy rain, with organisers hoping to offer solace and comfort to communities which have been deeply affected by significant increases in suicide rates in recent weeks.

Speakers at the event included one of the organisers, Majella Cremin, who said the vigil was designed to show support, offer help and advise of the services available.

Reflective music was provided by Adrian Kenny.

Also contributing to proceedings was Valerie Haynes, from the Circle of Hope group based in Dublin Hill and Ballyvolane.

Ms Haynes described how tragedy in their communities led to the formation of a group which now meets on a monthly basis.

She encouraged those in the Togher, Ballyphehane and Lough areas to pull together and support each other, before inviting all present to participate in a minute’s silence to remember those who have passed away by suicide, as well as friends and families.

Following on from last night’s vigil, an information session from Ger Rynne of Pieta House will take place on Monday at 7.30pm at the Lough Scout Hall. Staff from the HSE’s mental health services will also attend. It is the first of a number of free meetings taking place in the coming weeks.
