SENIOR executives in City Hall have been given responsibility for various parts of the city centre as proof of what the council says is their commitment to its revitalisation.
Cork City Council’s chief executive Ann Doherty has asked her senior executives and directors of services to each be responsible for a different part of the city centre such as Patrick Street, North Main Street, Oliver Plunkett Street and MacCurtain Street.

The heads of departments including Roads, Housing, Planning and Environment are all expected to take responsibility for a different section.
Under the scheme, business organisations, resident groups and traders’ associations will be able to raise issues concerning them directly with the executives who can try and resolve the matter.
The city centre has been divided into six areas: 1. Heart of the city (the retail core taking in Patrick Street, Oliver Plunkett Street and the streets leading onto them), 2. South Mall/east end of city centre island (taking in South Mall and the transition area between the city centre and docklands), 3. North Main Street,(taking in North Main St, Cornmarket St and The Marsh) 4. Shandon, (Shandon St, the Shandon Area, Popes Quay and Blarney St) 5. Barrack Street (Barrack St, St Finbarr’ s Cathedral and the surrounding areas), and 6. MacCurtain Street (taking in Bridge Street, Copley Street, Richmond Hill and the surrounding area).
