PLANS for 42 new housing units in Blackpool were given the go-ahead by Cork City Council last night, raising hopes of a fightback against dereliction in the area.
Elected members expressed optimism that the homes would give the area a shot-in-the-arm and help tackle the shortage of accommodation in the city, following other developments at Deanrock and Spring Lane.
City housing officials have indicated that there may be several more housing schemes brought before members for approval in the coming months.
The development, on Gerald Griffin Street, will deliver 19 two-bedroom apartments, 20 three-bedroom apartments, two two-bedroom duplex houses and a community facility.
Local councillors welcomed the development, suggesting that it will breathe new life into Blackpool.
Fianna Fáil’s Kenneth O’Flynn said: “It is a very positive step in the regeneration of Blackpool.
“It will kick off the regeneration of the area — there will be a new population and people will open shops to deal with this; it will bring life back to the village.”
AAA Councillor Fiona Ryan added: “It is exactly what the area needs: a direct-build by the local authority to rejuvenate the area and bring new families back into Blackpool.”
She said the area has been dreadfully let down in the last five year and felt this will go a long way towards revitalising Blackpool.
Some concerns were raised by members. Fianna Fáil’s John Sheehan pointed to the potential issue of traffic in the area, noting the presence of several large schools nearby but said he did support the plan overall.
“It will pose some challenges to us, but it is good to revitalise an area which has struggled for some time.”
Sinn Féin’s Thomas Gould questioned the shortage of parking spaces – just 17 for the 41 units – and green space.
But, he also welcomed the development and said he had faith in the city’s housing department to deliver the project in the best manner possible.
Valerie O’Sullivan, head of housing with Cork City Council, said the development is a ‘fine example’ or new urban living that is in high demand
