jd-wetherspoon-logoUK pub chain, JD Wetherspoons, still plans to open a new bar in Douglas despite withdrawing its planning application for the site of the former Permanent TSB bank.
Wetherspoon already operates two bars in Dublin, with plans to open up to 50 new premises in Ireland in the coming years.
Its planned city centre pub, The Linen Weaver, on Paul Street, is set to open in September employing 50 staff.
The chain had sought planning permission to convert the former bank at East Douglas Street into a bar serving drink and food with a beer garden to the rear.
It was the second planning application for the site, with the first application deemed incomplete.
A spokesperson for Wetherspoons told the Evening Echo the company still planned to open a venue in Douglas and would be submitting a new planning application:
“We are in talks with the landlord with reference to some issues on the contract in relation to the site in Douglas. Once these have been dealt with we will look to submit a revised planning application.”
The company did not have a timeline for when they expected the new Douglas venue to open.
JD Wetherspoon operate 1,000 pubs across the UK and is known for its low prices.
The company said the Linen Weaver pub on the site of the former Newport Bar and Mangans nightclub will open on Tuesday September 8, and will employ 50 staff.
