At approximately 10.45pm on Friday night, two men approached a house in Togher to steal a car to leave the city. The family — a mother and father and their three children, all aged under 13 — were at home at the time.
The couple answered the door where they were threatened by the men, believed to be in possession of a firearm and a knife. They demanded money and the keys to their car — a silver BMW. The children were in their bedrooms at the time and were not directly threatened.
The gang fled in the BMW and another vehicle, but the other car — a silver Subaru Forrester — collided with another vehicle on the Togher Road. No injuries were reported, and the car was located by gardaí after being abandoned at Brookfield Lawn.
The BMW fled the scene but was stopped by a Garda Traffic Unit on a routine patrol on College Road after they became suspicious, and the driver was arrested.
Gardaí are now looking for the other man.
Witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have been in the Togher Road area Friday night between 9pm and 11.15pm, are asked to contact Togher Garda Station on (021) 4947120, The Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111, or any Garda Station.
