EFFORTS to ease traffic pressure in Douglas are progressing.

If approved, proposals will see the removal of the roundabout at the South Douglas Road/N40 off ramp in West Douglas.

Douglas Roundabout which is to get traffic lights.

It will be replaced by a signalised junction in a series of work that will also see the extension of footpaths and the construction of a traffic island in the area. A report issued to city councillors this week recommended that the local authority sign off on an official agreement with Cork County Council to complete the works, though no timeframe has been established as yet.

Councillors in both local authorities have expressed concerns about the impact of the works, with city councillors previously rejecting the proposals due to a lack of information.

They have called for detailed traffic surveys before agreeing to the works, which will need to be approved by full Council before progressing. The joint venture will impact traffic flow in Douglas, Rochestown and on the N40, with county engineers predicting traffic in the area to increase by 8% by 2033.
