GARDAÍ have reiterated calls for the public to lock their cars following a spate of vehicles being broken into on the northside of the city.
Concerned Farranree residents say they suspect the crimes are being perpetrated by one individual, and also believe drugs are involved.
They raised the issue with gardaí at this week’s meeting of the Farranree, Blackpool and Shandon Community Safety Forum.
They called for tougher laws for repeat offenders who are arrested and released, only to continue committing crimes.
“The last few weeks there have been a spate of cars broken into in Farranree. Seemingly it’s the same person, and drugs are involved,” said a local man.
“Gardaí bring him in, then he’s released and he does they same thing again. Last Friday at a local bar I go to, someone ran in and said to the barman that even his car had been broken into.”
Superintendent Mick Comyns said it is an issue that has raised its head as of late, but that this specific instance is being dealt with.
“A person was arrested and was brought to court so hopefully that will be an end to it,” he said.
“However, when we bring people to court it’s up to the judge whether they’re kept in custody or let out. And if they’re let out again, they are free until the court case. So that night they can do the same again. We do say if we think someone is going to keep committing crime if they are let out. Sometimes the judge goes with us, sometimes they don’t, depending on the history of the person before them.”
Supt Comyns said a lot of cars are still being left unlocked at night, and are consequently being ransacked.
