MAYFIELD’s heroic hurlers are set to receive a civic reception at City Hall in the coming weeks.
The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Des Cahill, last night confirmed that he will honour the team’s efforts over the coming weeks.

Speaking at last night’s meeting of Cork City Council, Mr Cahill commended the hurlers who claimed the All-Ireland Club Junior Hurling Championship at Croke Park just over a week ago.
There was unanimous praise for the hurlers, with the win heralded by councillors as a great day for Cork hurling.
A number of councillors, including Mayfield-based Ted Tynan and Stephen Cunningham, congratulated the team on their win, joking that the celebrations were still ongoing on the city’s northside.
Fianna Fáil councillor Seán Martin hailed it as a proud day for hurling in Cork.
“It’s great to see a Cork hurling team step out into Croke Park and win an All-Ireland title,” he said.
It is just the latest honour for Mayfield’s heroic hurlers who were also awarded the North City & District Sports Awards Team of the Year at a gala ceremony over the weekend.
Elected members also took the chance to praise a number of other sports stars from Mayfield, including boxer Thomas McCarthy, who was described as a future Olympian by one member of the council.
The 18-year-old flyweight boxer recently competed for the National Elite Championship at flyweight level, losing to Rio Olympian, Brendan Irvine.
However, councillors warned that the defeat would only spur the Mayfield man onto bigger and better things in the coming months.
