The offshore heavy transport vessel ‘Albatross’ departed its berth at the Cork Dockyard this morning for a short journey across the harbour to Ringaskiddy.

For the past few weeks the vessel has been docked at the Cork Dockyard, formerly Verolme Dockyard, while three giant cranes were slowly moved on board.
Manufactured by Liebherr in Killarney, the cranes are destined for Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

At Ringaskiddy the three cranes will be welded securely to the deck of the Albatross before departing across the Atlantic.

The ship was originally designed as an oil tanker and converted to a crane carrier. The ship is designed to carry a very large volume of ballast in the lower ballast tanks to counteract the weight of the cranes on deck.
Each crane weighs approx. 900 tons, however the weight is evenly distributed on the main deck of the vessel, hence the vessel has a very good level of stability.
