It is understood that the man is currently in an induced coma at the hospital and remains in a life-threatening condition. Gardaí have described the man as being in a “critical” state.
The incident unfolded on Pearse Street in Clonakilty shortly before 12.30am on Saturday morning.
A man, thought to have been on a night out in the town, became involved in an altercation and sustained a head injury.
Members of the emergency services rushed to the scene and the man was brought to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
Now, Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the assault, or anyone who has any information about it, to come forward.
“There’s a man’s life at risk here from a serious head injury. If people know anything about it, I would think that they should go to the gardaí,” said Cork County Councillor John O’Sullivan.
“This is something that nobody wants. This man is somebody’s son, or boyfriend, maybe a brother, and families don’t deserve this kind of thing.
“So I would appeal to anybody who has any information to help the gardaí. Having said that, because of the infrastructure of the town, I’m quite satisfied with the coverage of CCTV that’s there that this will all be looked into and gardaí will be able to come to a conclusion on it.”
Cllr O’Sullivan said the occurrence is an unusual one for Clonakilty, and that the area is not known for brawls or assaults.
“This would definitely be an isolated incident. The pubs in Clonakilty have a system where if you cause trouble in one pub you’re out of all of them. The business association and everybody work to make sure the place is enjoyable, but there is a strict regime there that things like this aren’t tolerated. So that’s a reason for people not to cause trouble, and they generally don’t. This would be a once off incident,” he said.
“I don’t know if he is from the area but it is very possible that he isn’t because there are lots of parties and lots of hens and stags that come to Clonakilty every weekend. It is my understanding that he is in an induced coma and is in a very serious condition, but I hope he can somehow make a full recovery.”
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the Clonakilty Garda Station on (023) 8821570 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.
