A rail strike is scheduled this Friday from 6am to 9pm, and according to President of the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU), John Moloney there are currently no signs of a resolution to the dispute before then.

“No worker here wants to strike, and we’re trying to minimise the impact on passengers but we’ve been left with no choice,” said Mr Moloney, who is a bus driver in Cork.

“Talks have not been reconvened by the Workplace Relations Commission, perhaps they feel that there would be no breakthrough in the negotiations even if they did,” said Mr Moloney.

The strike is being held by the unions NBRU and SIPTU and is scheduled to affect Iarnród Éireann workers and passengers this Friday.

The scheduled stoppage follows a dispute over payment for past productivity improvements, and union leaders have claimed that the company must meet with unions to discuss the problems if the strike is to be averted.
