ANTI-social behaviour in the area around UCC will be highlighted at Monday’s meeting of the Cork City joint policing committee.
Fine Gael’s Cllr John Buttimer will bring up the issue in a motion seeking reassurance from garda management in the city that community policing in the Barrack Street will continue to be a priority.
The motion will also query the effectiveness of CCTV in stemming anti-social behaviour, with a view to exploring funding options for the roll out of CCTV around the area of UCC.

Cllr John Buttimer calls for  exploring funding options for roll out of CCTV around UCC

Cllr Buttimer said he tabled the motion following the release of a video on Youtube in October by the Magazine Road Residents’ Association.
The video was taken on Thursday night, October 15 last , and showed a large group of students, believed to be from UCC, standing on walls and in the front garden of a house loudly singing and kicking bags of rubbish along the road.
Cllr Buttimer said the start of the college year every autumn is “like groundhog day”, with some students throwing parties, burning wheelie bins and damaging cars.

And he said residents of the area are concerned about noise in the middle of the night when students are returning to the area after nights out in other parts of the city.
He added: “There is a lack of regard for other residents in the area.”
Cllr Buttimer will be calling for a more proactive approach to tackling behaviour by some students, saying that, for example, the enforcement of litter laws would help address some issues.
During Monday’s meeting, reports will also be delivered on crime statistics for Cork city by garda management.
