Mayfield library closes as heating system fails

MAYFIELD’S Frank O’Connor Library was closed until further notice yesterday, following the failure of the building’s heating system, writes Audrey Ellard Walsh.

Sinn Féin Councillor Stephen Cunningham called for repair works to be completed urgently, saying: “There was also no warning of the closure. It was immediate and out of the blue.

“I received a call from Corporate Affairs in Cork City Council at about 3pm saying that the library was closing immediately to carry out repairs.”

The library, located on the Old Youghal Road, has experienced a reduction of service levels in recent years due to staffing shortages. Cllr Cunningham added: “I’m confident that the library will reopen, but when would be the worry. My information is that it is closed indefinitely and I wouldn’t like to see it remain closed into the new year. I would be concerned about the area as there is no bank, very few facilities for young people and schools depend heavily on the library.”

Cllr Cunningham will be placing a motion before City Council on Monday calling for immediate funding for repair works.
